Bear Reads is for children who know most of their letter sounds (s, a, t, p, i, n and so on) and are ready to read words on their own, usually around ages 4 to 8. If your child is still learning letter sounds, start with our app Bear Phonics, then move on to Bear Reads.

• Level 1, Short vowel words (ages 4–5, Pre-K–Kindergarten): cap, bed, sun. 8-page books.
• Level 2, Two letters, one sound (ages 5–6, Kindergarten): sh, ch, th, ng, ck. 10-page books.
• Level 3, Blends (ages 5–7, Kindergarten–Grade 1): frog, stop, jump, tent. 12-page books.
• Level 4, Vowel teams (ages 6–8, Grade 1–2): ee, ai, oa, igh, oo, ar, or. 14-page books.

Every word in a book uses only the sounds of its level and the levels before, plus a few sight words practised in the warm-up. Your child can read any book they like; Bear's glowing book is simply the best next one.

On the home screen, press and hold the small lock at the top right for 3 seconds, then answer the times-table question. A quick tap does nothing, so little ones won't get in by accident. On the Parents page you can see your child's progress and what each book teaches, choose an American or British reading voice, turn Bear's voice on or off, and unlock or restore the full version.

Unlock everything opens all 60 books in 4 levels and all 98 sight words, plus every new book we add later. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it works with Family Sharing.

Sign in with the same Apple ID you bought it with, open the Parents page (hold the lock for 3 seconds, then answer the question) and tap Restore purchases. With Family Sharing, family members can restore it the same way with their own Apple ID.

With Ask to Buy, the request goes to your family organiser to approve. Once it's approved, Bear Reads unlocks automatically; there's nothing else to do.

• Turn the volume up, and check Bear's voice is on in the Parents page.
• If headphones or a speaker are connected, check the sound is going there.

On the Parents page, scroll to the bottom and tap Start again. This clears the books read and sight words met on this device. Your purchase is not affected.
